BodhigayāNāgādhipati Award It arose from the outstanding appreciation of the goodness of the Naga towards Buddhism, according to the evidence that appears in Buddhism and from the teachings of the noble monks who practice well and correctly, which have been seen and known as stories for more than 2600 years and have been recorded in many Tripitaka scriptures. And from the faith and belief in the Naga of the people in the Mekong River Basin since ancient times until the present era, which will be used as an example as follows:

The incident of the Black Naga King occurred at the time when the Great Being was offered rice milk by Sujata. After eating, he floated the golden tray and prayed on the bank of the Neranjara River that if he would attain supreme enlightenment and become the Perfectly Enlightened Buddha, he would let this tray float against the current. His wish came true. The tray sank and hit the golden trays of three other Buddhas in the past. The Black Naga King, who was sleeping under the Neranjara River, heard the sound and immediately knew that another Buddha would be born in this Bhadrakalpa.

The incident of the Naga King Mucalinda After the Buddha had attained enlightenment, he enjoyed the bliss of liberation in the sixth week under the Mucalinda tree. There was rain mixed with wind throughout the week. The Naga King Mucalinda coiled his body around the Buddha and spread his hood over the Buddha’s head to protect him from the sun, wind, and rain and to protect him from all dangers from wild animals for seven days. When the rain stopped, the Naga uncoiled his body, transformed into a man, and went to pay homage to the Buddha. The Buddha exclaimed, “Seclusion is happiness for one who has seen the Dhamma, who delights in living in seclusion, who understands the truth. Non-harming is restraint of beings, and freedom from lust is happiness in all ways. The elimination of ego is the highest happiness.”

At present, the Naga are honored as the gods who protect Buddhism, take care of people's happiness and suffering, and provide the best for the abundance of crops and inspire success in what is desired, such as:

Phraya Sri Suthonakraj is the king of the Thai Naga. He likes to observe the precepts, practice meditation, and practice Dhamma. He has a gentle and compassionate nature and does not like fighting.

Phraya Sri Sattanakarat is one of the Naga with powerful power and authority. It appears in the Urankathathu legend that the Lord Buddha travelled to Doi Nanthakangri, which was the former home of Nandayak. There was a Naga with seven heads named Sri Sattanakarat who came to ask the Lord Buddha to leave his footprints there. Later, that place became a city named Sri Sattanakarat.

The Satta Naga King, the guardian of the chest relic of the Lord Buddha at Phra That Phanom.

Phraya Phuchong Naga Raja There is a legend about the existence of Phraya Phuchong Naga, who is related to human life. People believe that he resides and practices asceticism, protecting Buddhism at Khao Ngon Naga, Krabi Province, protecting humans and the environment, both the waters of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, and also resides everywhere, land, rivers, and mountains in the land of Buddhism. He has supernatural powers, magic, and practices asceticism as a hermit. He is the only Naga who can live in the Brahma realm. He has love, compassion, and loves nature and the environment.

In addition, the story of the Naga is also related to the culture, traditions, and way of life that have existed alongside Buddhist society for a long time, both in terms of bringing about the development of wisdom and in terms of creating faith to generate power, which has appeared as a natural phenomenon that humans have developed into various branches of art and culture, whether it be literature, painting, sculpture, and architecture, including stories in the form of folk legends and local history that have been passed down until becoming a cultural heritage.

Along the way, it was found that every temple had stories and Naga statues that appeared widely everywhere. This was the origin of the initiative to support research on the topic "Influence of beliefs in Naga related to Buddhism in the Mekong River Basin" and to think of collecting correct knowledge about Naga to cover all, in order to find the Naga's connection to protecting Buddhism and to make the beliefs in Naga generally understood.
