Project to promote Thai monks to study and practice Dhamma in depth in the land of Buddha, India - Nepal, 1st generation
The project to promote Thai monks to study and practice Dhamma in depth in the land of Buddha, India and Nepal is considered a project that is very important for the propagation of Buddhism. In this project, Bodhgaya Institute received kindness from Phra Thep Brahmawachiranayok (Opas Niruttimethi, P.6), advisor to the Sangha Region 11, abbot of Wat Phra Narai Maharat Worawihan, who at that time held the ecclesiastical title of Phra Thammaworanayok, the provincial ecclesiastical chief of Nakhon Ratchasima, kindly chaired the project and directed the selection of 31 monks at the Sangha chief level from Nakhon Ratchasima Province to study and train in the project and to stay at Wat Thai Kusinara Chalermrat Kasia, Kusinara District, Uttar Pradesh, Republic of India for 99 days.
Cataract Surgery Project for the Poor Hindu Community of Nepal
BodhigayaVijjalaya 980 Institute by Dr. Supachai Veeraputchong, Secretary-General of the Institute, together with the Thai Temple Lumpini, developed the cataract surgery project of the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu, which is a Buddhist project to relieve suffering for the poor Indonesian and Nepalese people. This cataract surgery project initially came from the assistance project of the Thai government to the Nepalese government by donating 200,000 baht to the Cataract Surgery Assistance Foundation of Dr. Siddhattha Sakya, a Nepalese ophthalmologist. Originally, the Buddhist temple of Nepalese monks in Kathmandu was used as the surgery venue. However, due to budget constraints, hygiene problems, and unsuitability of the venue, the assistance to the poor Nepalese people was limited to a narrow area. When the Bodhgaya Institute 980 started providing financial assistance in 2009, the cataract surgery for Nepalese people was expanded to the Thai Temple Lumpini, allowing for wider development of assistance and the introduction of Ophthalmologists from Thailand traveled to perform surgeries on patients, which led to the project expanding its scope to a wider extent. Currently, there are many organizations from both the public and private sectors, as well as non-profit organizations from Thailand, joining in activities to help extend and support the project. To date, we have been able to provide cataract surgeries to tens of thousands of Indonesians and Nepalis, and there has been a donation to the fund to help Nepalis in need of more than 20 million baht, reducing the burden and not wasting the government budget.
Creating a “Metta” School
BodhigayaVijjalaya 980 Institute realizes the importance of education that instills the Buddha's teachings. Therefore, together with the Royal Thai Embassy in Kathmandu, we support the construction project of Metta School by donating the construction budget to Lumbini Social Service Foundation, which is operated by Thai Temple Lumbini. The construction began in 2003. The beginning of Lumbini Social Service Foundation came from the gathering of young people who were interested in Buddhism, meditation practice, and social welfare activities, which eventually developed into a primary school. At present, Metta School provides education and Buddhist training to poor Hindu Nepalese children living in Lumbini and nearby villages from kindergarten to junior high school. There are currently as many as 750 students studying. Therefore, the donation to support Metta School by Bodhikaya Institute 980 is another important mission in providing educational assistance to Nepalese people as well as promoting more cooperation in Buddhism between Thailand and Nepal.
