Dhamma Century Cup: Celebrating 75 Years of Thailand-Cambodia Relations

On March 8, 2025, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Mr Maris Sangiampongsa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, and Mr. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, jointly presided over the opening ceremony of the Dhamma Century Cup friendly match. This event was held in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Thailand-Cambodia relations at the Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.

Mr. Maris stated that today's football match, held in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia, reflects the commitment of both countries to strengthening their friendship even further. Football is a sport beloved by the people of both nations, serving as a medium through which the Thai government aims to collaborate closely with the Cambodian government, uniting the public sector, private sector, and citizens of both nations as one team. The goal is to promote peace, prosperity, and the well-being of the people of Thailand and Cambodia, guided by the principles of unity and harmony as taught by the Buddha. Furthermore, he believes that the objective of the Bodhigaya Vijjalaya 980 Institute, which supports both the Thai and Cambodian governments in organizing this significant event, will foster closer ties between the people of both countries, particularly among the younger generations.

"I would like to see the principles of Buddhism, which both countries respect and uphold as a guide for living together, serve as a foundation that enables athletes, the younger generation, as well as the general public, the government, and the private sectors of both nations to collaborate harmoniously, fostering love and unity. Personally, I am committed to working closely with Mr. Prak Sokhonn to strengthen the friendship between Thailand and Cambodia. I firmly believe that the future of our two nations is deeply intertwined and inseparable. We must move forward together, develop together, and function as one team. Today's sporting event is part of the celebration marking the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Cambodia. I am confident that our longstanding relationship and friendship will continue to grow even stronger." Mr. Maris stated.

Mr. Prak Sokhonn stated that Cambodia and Thailand have not only been good neighbors for a long time but also share traditions, culture, and common values. Their relationship has grown even closer and deeper through reciprocal visits between the leaders of both countries. There has been active cooperation in various fields, including politics, security, economy, society, culture, tourism, and people-to-people connectivity, with the aim of seeking mutual benefits. Diplomatic relations between the two nations have been continuously advancing, elevating to various strategic collaborations. Previously, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet visited Thailand in February 2024. Therefore, the Cambodian people eagerly anticipate the visit of Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra to Cambodia to further strengthen the bond between the two countries. Mr. Prak further stated that sports play an essential role in promoting good relations and fostering mutual understanding between the people of both nations. Sporting events help create an environment conducive to peace and cooperation. Today's activities serve as proof of the excellent friendship, good neighborliness, solidarity, and close cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand. This occasion marks the beginning of various activities throughout 2025 to commemorate the anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He emphasized that the true winner of today’s competition is the long-lasting friendship between the two nations.
